Rich snippets and SEO

Make star ratings appear in Google search results

Star ratings in Google search results — the gold stars under your product titles — come from a small piece of code called JSON-LD structured data. The review widget outputs this automatically for every product that has at least one approved review. Done right, it's free organic traffic and click-through lift.

What it looks like in Google

When Google picks up the structured data, your product listing in search shows:

  • A row of gold stars
  • The average rating (for example, "4.8")
  • The total review count (for example, "Based on 137 reviews")

This appears in both organic search results and Google Shopping ads. Stores with rich snippets typically see 15–30% higher click-through rates than stores without.

Turning it on

It's on by default. On the Product Reviews block in the theme editor, check that Include SEO structured data is enabled. Turn it off only if you have another app (or a theme feature) outputting Product/AggregateRating schema for the same products — duplicate markup confuses Google.

Google needs to:

  • Crawl the updated product page (typically a few days for active stores, longer for new ones)
  • Decide the structured data is trustworthy (this gets faster as your store ages and your reviews are clearly real)
  • Choose to show rich snippets (Google decides per query — they don't always show even when valid)

Most stores see rich snippets appear within 2–4 weeks of getting their first reviews. If it's been longer, see Troubleshooting → "Star ratings not showing in Google search results yet."

What's in the structured data

For each product with reviews, the widget emits:

  • Product schema (title, image, description, SKU, brand, price, availability)
  • AggregateRating schema (average rating, review count, scale)

Google reads this on top of your normal product page content. No theme edits are required.
