Who can leave a review
Require login or accept guest reviews, and what pre-fills for logged-in customers
There are two paths a customer can take to leave a review: log in to their store account first, or fill out the form as a guest. Both have trade-offs — guest reviews capture more total reviews, login-required reviews catch less spam. You can pick either approach from the widget settings.
The "Require customer login" setting
Find this in the theme editor on the Product Reviews block (or in Settings > Reviews for the global default).
- On (default): only logged-in customers can submit reviews. Guests see a Log in to review link that takes them to the storefront login page and brings them back to the product after sign-in. Their name and email are pre-filled.
- Off: anyone can submit. Guests enter their name and email themselves. Logged-in customers still get pre-fill.
How verified-purchase matching works
A review is verified when the email used to submit it matches an order on your store. This works whether or not login is required:
- Logged-in: the customer's account email is used → verified if it matches an order
- Guest: the email they typed is used → verified if it matches an order
So requiring login doesn't change the verification rate — it just changes whether anonymous shoppers can submit at all.
Picking the right default
- Require login on — best for stores with mature customer accounts, premium brands where authenticity matters, or stores with a spam problem
- Require login off — best for stores where customer accounts are rare, mass-market products where review volume matters more than vetting, or international stores where customers don't always sign in
You can change this setting anytime. The change only affects new submissions.
A note on pre-fill
When a logged-in customer opens the review form, the Your name field is pre-filled as "First L." (first name + last initial) to protect privacy on the public storefront. The email field is pre-filled with their account email (used only for verification — never shown publicly).
