Merchant notifications
Get an email when a new review is submitted or a low-rating review comes in
The app can send you (the merchant) an email whenever a new review is submitted, or when a review's rating falls below a threshold you set. Useful for staying on top of moderation without manually refreshing the Reviews page.
Where to set this up
In the app, go to Settings > Emails. The merchant notification options are in the Email Notifications section.
New review notifications
Toggle New review notifications on to get an email whenever a review arrives. The email includes:
- The customer's name and email
- The product they reviewed
- Their star rating
- The review title and body (if any)
- A link to open the review in your admin
Best for stores doing manual moderation. If you have Auto-publish on for most reviews, you may want this notification only for ones that didn't auto-publish — coming in a future release.
Negative review alerts
Toggle Negative review alerts on and set the Negative review threshold (1, 2, or 3 stars). You'll get a separate, more urgent-looking email for any review at or below that rating.
Use this to:
- Reply quickly before the review goes live (if auto-publish is off)
- Reach out privately to make the customer's experience right
- Spot product quality issues before they show up in more reviews
Most stores set the threshold to 3 stars — anything below "neutral" gets the alert.
Where notifications are sent
By default, notifications go to your store's owner email (the one on file in Shopify Admin > Settings > General). You can also change the destination address in Settings > Account.
Turning notifications off
Both toggles can be turned off independently. If you're getting too many emails, turning off new-review notifications and keeping only negative-review alerts is a common compromise.
