Theme Review

Check your live theme's code and pages the way a search engine sees them (Growth and up)

Theme review checks your live theme's code and one page of each type the way a search engine sees them. It's part of the Growth plan and up.

Running a theme review

Open Theme review and click Review theme. It takes a minute or two. The review looks at your published theme only.

Theme code checks

  • Page title tag - the layout prints the title with page_title
  • Meta description tag - the theme prints a meta description from page_description
  • Canonical URL - a canonical link in the head
  • Social sharing tags (Open Graph) - without og tags, shared links show no image or title
  • X (Twitter) card tags - for rich previews on X
  • Mobile viewport - required for mobile-friendly pages
  • Page language - the html tag declares the language
  • No stray noindex - flags "noindex" in the theme head so you can make sure it only applies to pages you want hidden
  • H1 headings - product, collection, page and blog post templates each have an H1 heading

Page checks

SEO Turbo loads your home page and one product, collection, page and blog post (the lowest-scoring of each) and checks:

  • The page loads
  • Title length (aim for 20-65 characters) and Meta description length (aim for 70-160)
  • Exactly one H1 heading
  • A canonical URL
  • A social sharing image (og:image)
  • The page can be indexed
  • Images have alt text
  • Structured data is valid JSON
  • No duplicate structured data - the same type printed more than once
  • The expected structured data is present: Product on product pages, Blog post on blog posts, Organization on the home page

Pass, Check and Fix

Each check shows Pass, Check or Fix. The theme score is the share of checks that pass, with Check counting as half.

Theme files that print their own structured data

If any theme files contain JSON-LD, they're listed under Your theme prints structured data too. That's only a problem when they print the same types as SEO Turbo. If they do, turn that type off under Schema or remove it from the theme. See Schema (Structured Data).

Password-protected stores

If your storefront is password protected, only the theme code is checked. Page checks run once your store is open.
