AI Discovery (llms.txt, agents.md and robots.txt)
Control what ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and AI shopping agents read about your store
AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity, Google's AI answers and AI shopping agents all read your store. The AI discovery page shows what they see and lets you control it.
What Shopify serves to AI assistants
Shopify publishes these files for every store automatically:
- /agents.md - Shopify's main description of your store for AI agents
- /llms.txt - a summary of your store for large language models
- /llms-full.txt - the longer version of llms.txt
- /robots.txt - rules for which crawlers may read your store
- /sitemap.xml - the list of pages search engines should index
- /api/mcp - Shopify's storefront endpoint that AI shopping agents use to search products and build carts
The AI discovery check (all plans)
Click Check AI discovery to see whether each file is available, what your llms.txt says right now, which AI crawlers your robots.txt allows, and how ready your catalog is for AI shopping. The check also runs with your automatic re-audits.
Why a theme template is needed
Shopify only lets you customise llms.txt, agents.md and robots.txt through templates in your published theme. SEO Turbo writes the template for you. You paste it into your theme once, and SEO Turbo checks that it's still there and up to date.
Writing your llms.txt (Growth and up)
Under Your llms.txt, describe your store in your own words:
- One-paragraph summary - who you are and what you sell. Leave it empty to use your store description.
- Who you serve
- Why shop with you - one point per line, for example free returns or handmade in Portugal
- Shipping and returns in a sentence
- Anything else AI assistants should know
- Collections to list and Products to list, and whether to List your pages (About, Contact, FAQ and so on)
Click Save and regenerate. SEO Turbo combines your text with your chosen collections, products and policies into an llms.txt template.
Installing the template
- Click Copy llms.txt template.
- In Shopify, go to Online Store > Themes, open the ⋯ menu on your live theme and choose Edit code.
- In the templates folder, add a new file named
llms.txt.liquid, paste and save. To replace both llms.txt and agents.md with your version, name itagents.md.liquidinstead. - Come back and click Check AI discovery to confirm it's live.
Template statuses
- Up to date - your theme has SEO Turbo's latest template
- Out of date - paste the new version - you've changed your llms.txt or your catalog since you pasted it. Copy the template again and replace the file.
- Custom (not from SEO Turbo) - the file exists but wasn't made by SEO Turbo
- Not installed - Shopify's default is used
AI crawler rules (Growth and up)
The AI crawlers table lists the main AI crawlers, the company behind each and what it's used for:
- AI answers and search crawlers (for example OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot) decide whether your store can be cited in AI answers. Blocking them keeps you out of those answers.
- Model training crawlers (for example GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, CCBot) only collect training data. Blocking them doesn't affect AI answers.
Under AI crawler rules, choose Allow or Block for each, save, then click Copy robots.txt template and add it as templates/robots.txt.liquid the same way. It keeps Shopify's default rules and adds your choices.
Catalog readiness for AI shopping
AI assistants recommend products they can understand. This section shows how many products have a real description (50 words or more), a meta description, and alt text on all images. Click Improve the weakest products to go straight to them.
If your store still shows Shopify's default llms.txt, see llms.txt or agents.md Not Changing.
