Broken Links and Redirects

Find links that lead nowhere and redirect them in one click

Broken links send shoppers and search engines to pages that don't exist. SEO Turbo finds them two ways and lets you fix most of them with a single redirect.

  • The broken link scan - click Scan for broken links on the Broken links page. SEO Turbo checks the links inside your products, collections, pages and blog posts, and also loads your home page and your most recently updated pages to catch links in menus, footers and sections. It also runs automatically with your re-audits.
  • Visitor 404 tracking - when a real visitor lands on a page that doesn't exist, the SEO Turbo app embed reports it. These appear with Visitor under Found by, along with how many Hits they've had.

Links you've already redirected in Shopify count as working. Each plan checks up to a set number of links per scan: 250 on Free, 2,500 on Growth, 20,000 on Pro and 50,000 on Plus.

The tabs

  • Open - broken links that still need attention
  • Redirected - links you've redirected, with where they now point
  • Ignored - links you chose to ignore
  • Fixed - links that work again or that nothing links to any more

When a later scan finds that a scan-found link works again, it moves to Fixed by itself. Visitor-reported links stay open until you redirect or ignore them.

  1. On the Open tab, find the link. Linked from shows the page it was found on.
  2. Under Fix, the Redirect to field is filled with the closest match SEO Turbo found in your store, for example a product with a similar handle.
  3. Change the target if you like. Enter a path on your store (starting with /) or a full https:// address.
  4. Click Redirect.

SEO Turbo creates the redirect in Shopify (you'll also see it under Online Store > Navigation > URL redirects) and moves the link to Redirected.

If a link doesn't matter, click Ignore. You can bring it back with Reopen.

Redirect allowance

The Free plan includes 25 redirects a month. Every paid plan has unlimited redirects. The Broken links page shows how many you have left this month.

On the Pro plan and up, the scan also checks links to other websites and images. These show as External or Image. Links to other websites can't be redirected from your store, so fix them by editing the page that links there.

Password-protected stores

If your storefront is password protected, the scan can't load your pages. It checks links against your catalog instead, and visitor 404 tracking starts once your store is open.

For how the visitor reports work, see Visitor 404 Tracking. If a redirect won't save, see Redirect Not Created.
