Order Management

View and track split shipping orders in the app dashboard

The Multi Ship dashboard gives you a central place to view and manage all split shipping orders. You can track each shipment's status from creation through fulfillment.

Dashboard overview

The main dashboard shows key metrics at a glance, including the number of split orders, pending shipments, and recently completed orders.

Order list

The orders page displays all split shipping orders with search and filters. You can search by order number or customer name, and filter by fulfillment status or date range. Each row shows the parent order number, customer name, number of shipments, and overall status.

Parent orders vs child shipments

When a customer splits their cart, Multi Ship creates a parent order (the original Shopify order) and one or more child orders (one per shipping address). The order list shows parent orders, and clicking into one reveals all its child shipments.

Child orders show the billing address of the person who paid the original order. If you prefer each child order to show its recipient's shipping address as the billing address instead, turn on Use each recipient's address as the billing address in Settings > Order splitting. Taxes are not affected either way — sales tax is always calculated from the shipping address.

Importing addresses from a CSV

When splitting an order with many destinations, you don't have to type every address. Choose Import in the split editor to upload a CSV file of recipient addresses — each row becomes one shipment, ready for you to assign items. A sample file with the expected columns is available for download on the import screen.

Creating orders from the Shopify admin

You do not have to start from an existing order. Create MultiShip order appears in the More actions menu on both the Orders and Draft orders pages of your Shopify admin and opens the order builder, where you pick products, assign them to addresses with live shipping rates, and email the customer a payment link. On an existing order, the Split Shipments action opens the manual split editor instead. If you have edited the order in Shopify, the editor shows it as it is now — items you removed are no longer offered for splitting.

The builder can send the customer one combined invoice for the whole order, or a separate invoice per address. Two options control discounts:

  • Apply automatic discounts — on by default. Your store's automatic discounts are applied to each shipment when the order is priced, exactly as they would be at checkout. Turn it off to charge regular prices with no automatic discounts.
  • Allow discount codes at checkout — for separate invoices only. Lets the customer enter a discount code when they pay each invoice.

If an address matches one of your shipping rules that block a destination, the editor shows a warning. You can still create the shipment; the rule only stops customers from choosing that destination themselves.

Orders that need attention

An order shows as Needs attention in two situations:

  • Some shipment orders aren't in Shopify yet. Shopify occasionally refuses to create an order for a moment (for example when many are created at once). Multi Ship retries automatically, usually within a few minutes, and the order page names the shipments still waiting. If one still can't be created after about two hours, the timeline says so and you can create it by hand from the shipment details.
  • The order was not split. Before splitting, Multi Ship confirms the order is fully paid at the prices it calculated for the checkout. If it isn't, the order is held and the page shows the reason. Check the payment in Shopify, then split it manually if it's correct.

Order detail page

The detail view shows the parent order at the top with its child shipments below. Each shipment displays the destination address, assigned items, shipping method, gift notes (if any), and fulfillment status. A timeline tracks key events like order creation, payment, and fulfillment updates.

Fulfillment tracking

As you fulfill child orders in Shopify, Multi Ship automatically updates their status in the dashboard. You can see which shipments are unfulfilled, in progress, or completed at a glance.

Fulfilling orders

You fulfill each child order directly in your Shopify admin, just like any regular order. Multi Ship does not change your fulfillment workflow. It simply organizes split orders so you can track which shipments belong together.

Reports and bookkeeping

Because splitting creates new orders, your revenue reports can count the same payment twice unless adjusted. Settings > Taxes & bookkeeping explains what to adjust and provides a CSV export with the total to subtract — see the Taxes & Bookkeeping article for details.
