How Free Shipping Bar Works

What shoppers see, where the free shipping goal comes from, and how it changes by country

Most free shipping bars ask you to type in a number and show it to everyone. Free Shipping Bar works the other way round: it reads the free shipping goals you already set up in Shopify and shows each shopper the one that applies to their country. A shopper in the United States sees your domestic goal, a shopper in Germany sees your EU goal, and a shopper in a country you don't ship free to is told so rather than being promised a threshold that doesn't exist.

What Shoppers See

  • Empty cart — An announcement across the top of the page such as "Free shipping on orders over $50", so shoppers know the goal before they start.
  • Below the goal — "Add $18 more to unlock free shipping" with a progress bar that fills as items are added. The cart and product bars update the moment the cart changes, without a page reload; the top bar slides in for a few seconds with the new figure — after each cart change and on every page the shopper opens — then gets out of the way again (or stays on screen, if you prefer).
  • Goal reached — "You've unlocked free shipping!" with a short celebration.
  • Free shipping on every order — When a country has an unconditional free rate, the bar simply says so.
  • No free shipping for their country — An honest message: "Free shipping isn't available for Switzerland yet. Shipping is calculated at checkout." You can also choose to hide the bar in this case.

The same state drives all three placements — the top bar, the product page bar and the cart bar — so they never disagree with each other.

Where the Goal Comes From

The app reads two things from your Shopify admin:

  • Shipping zones — In Settings > Shipping and delivery, any zone with a $0 rate that has a condition like "order total is $50 and up" gives that zone's countries a $50 goal. A $0 rate with no condition means free shipping on every order for those countries.
  • Automatic free-shipping discounts — An active automatic discount of the "Free shipping" type with a minimum purchase amount counts as a goal for the countries it applies to. With no minimum, it counts as free shipping on every order.

When both apply to a country, the shopper gets the better deal: the lowest threshold wins, and "free on every order" beats any threshold. Countries in your Rest of world zone use that zone's goal.

If your setup doesn't fit — for example you use code discounts, or you want to promote a goal that isn't a shipping rate — you can switch to manual goals or override individual countries on the Growth plan. See Manual Goals & Country Overrides.

How the Country Is Decided

By default the app asks Shopify where the visitor is browsing from and uses that country. Alternatively you can tie the bar to the country the shopper selected in your store's country or market picker. Either way, the threshold is shown in the shopper's market currency, converted at your Shopify Markets rate. See Country Detection & Currencies.

Keeping Goals Up to Date

  • Discounts — Creating, editing or ending an automatic free-shipping discount reaches the bar within moments.
  • Shipping zones and rates — Shopify doesn't notify apps about shipping rate changes, so the app re-reads them every 6 hours. After editing a rate, click Sync now on the Shipping goals page to pick it up straight away.
  • Currency — If you change your store currency, goals are re-read automatically.

What Is Not Treated as a Goal

  • Code discounts — A free shipping discount that needs a code is not a goal, because the shopper hasn't got it yet.
  • Carrier-calculated rates — Rates from a carrier are never free and are ignored.
  • Product-specific shipping profiles — Only your general (default) profile is used. Custom profiles for specific products are listed in the app as ignored.
  • Weight-limited free rates — A $0 rate that only applies below a certain weight is shown as free shipping, with a warning in the app, because the bar can't know the weight of the cart.
