Country Detection & Currencies

How the app decides which country a shopper is in and which currency to show

The bar can only show the right goal if it knows which country the shopper is in. Free Shipping Bar offers two ways to decide that, converts the goal into the currency the shopper is browsing in, and lets you choose what happens when a country has no free shipping at all. All three settings live under Settings > Bar behaviour.

Choosing the Country Source

  • Visitor location (default) — The app asks Shopify where the visitor appears to be browsing from and uses that country. It works before the shopper has touched anything, so the very first page they see already shows the right goal. If the location can't be determined, the bar falls back to the store's selected country.
  • Selected market — The bar uses the country the shopper has chosen in your store's country or market selector (or your store's default country when they haven't chosen). Pick this if you use Shopify Markets with a country selector and want the bar to always match what the shopper picked, or if many of your customers browse through VPNs or from abroad and you'd rather they set the country themselves.

If the two would disagree — a visitor in France who has switched your store to the United States market — Visitor location shows the French goal and Selected market shows the US goal. Choose whichever matches how your checkout will actually behave.

Currency Conversion

Goals are stored in your store currency. When a shopper browses in another currency through Shopify Markets, the bar converts the goal using your store's current Markets rate and formats it in that currency, so a $50 goal appears as roughly €46 to a shopper paying in euros.

  • Converted amounts can look uneven — $50 might show as €46.13. If you'd rather show a round number for a market, add a country override (Growth and up) for that country with the exact amount you want (entered in your store currency, so pick a value that converts cleanly, or accept the small difference).
  • Rounding at checkout — If your Markets settings round converted prices, the bar's amount may differ from the checkout's by a few cents. Shoppers still unlock free shipping at the same point, because the comparison is done on the real cart total.

When a Country Has No Free Shipping

Under Settings > Bar behaviour, When free shipping isn't available controls what shoppers in a country with no free shipping see:

  • Show a message (default) — "Free shipping isn't available for Switzerland yet. Shipping is calculated at checkout." Honest, and it saves the shopper a surprise at checkout. The wording is editable under Translations.
  • Hide the bar — Nothing is shown. Choose this if you'd rather not draw attention to countries you don't ship free to.

Testing Another Country

  • Selected market — Use your store's country selector to switch, and the bar updates.
  • Visitor location — Shopify decides the location, so you can't switch it from the page. Use a VPN set to the country you want to check, or temporarily switch the country source to Selected market, test with the selector, and switch back.
  • In the theme editor — The editor shows the bar for your store's default country.

The detected country is remembered for the browsing session, so after changing settings open a new private window to see the result from scratch.
