Bar Behaviour
Settings that control when the bar shows and how it reacts, under Settings > Bar behaviour
Two places control the bar. The theme editor decides how it looks — position, colours, size, progress style. The app decides how it behaves — when the top bar appears and for how long, which cart total it compares, whether shoppers can close it, and what happens when the goal is reached. Behaviour settings are under Settings > Bar behaviour and apply to every placement at once.
Showing the Bar
- Enabled — The master switch. Turn it off to hide every placement without touching your theme. Useful while you set things up or if you pause free shipping.
- Show on empty cart — With nothing in the cart, show the teaser ("Free shipping on orders over $50"). Turn it off to show the bars only once the shopper has started a cart; in dynamic mode that means the top bar first appears after the first item is added.
- Pages (Growth and up) — Show the top bar on all pages, or only on the ones you tick: home, product, collection, cart, search, blog and page. The cart and product page bars belong to their own pages and aren't affected.
- Devices (Growth and up) — All devices, desktop only, or mobile only. Mobile screens are small, and some stores prefer to keep the bar off them and rely on the cart and product page bars instead.
Top Bar
The top bar behaves like an announcement rather than a fixture. By default it is on screen while the cart is empty, so the goal is the first thing a visitor learns, and then gets out of the way: once the cart has items it slides in for a few seconds on each page the shopper opens and after each cart change, with the updated progress, and hides again. Three settings under Settings > Bar behaviour > Top bar control this:
- When the top bar shows — Dynamically (default) — for a few seconds on each page and after each cart change, and as an announcement while the cart is empty keeps the bar out of the way once shopping starts while still reminding shoppers of their progress as they browse. Always keeps it on screen on every page like a fixed announcement bar, updating in place as the cart changes.
- Seconds to show on each page and after a cart change — Dynamic mode only. How long the bar stays in view each time it slides in (on page load with items in the cart, and after a cart change), from 2 to 30 seconds (default 6). Give shoppers long enough to read the remaining amount; on a busy page 6 seconds is plenty.
- Skip the announcement when your theme already shows one — Dynamic mode only, on by default. If your theme's own announcement bar is visible, the empty-cart announcement is not shown, so two bars never stack at the top of the page. Once the cart has items, the bar still slides in on each page and after cart changes. Turn it off if you want the free shipping goal shown alongside your theme's announcement.
The cart and product page bars are unaffected: they stay in place on their pages and update live.
Comparing the Cart
- Cart total to compare — Total after discounts (default) uses the amount the shopper will actually pay for the items, after automatic and code discounts. Item subtotal uses the amount before discounts. Match this to how your free shipping rate is evaluated: Shopify shipping rate conditions look at the cart total after discounts, so the default is right for detected goals. Pick Item subtotal if you use manual goals that you describe in terms of "spend $50 on products".
Country and Availability
- Country source — Visitor location or selected market. See Country Detection & Currencies.
- When free shipping isn't available — Show an honest message, or hide the bar. Also covered in that article.
Reactions
- Unlock celebration — A brief pulse and highlight when the shopper crosses the goal. On by default. Turn it off for a quieter storefront.
- Dismissible (Growth and up) — Adds a close button to the top bar. A shopper who closes it doesn't see it again for the rest of their browsing session — including the slide-ins on each page and after cart changes — and it returns on their next visit. Most useful with Always; in dynamic mode the bar already hides itself. The cart and product page bars can't be dismissed.
Custom CSS (Growth and Up)
A box for CSS that is added once to every page with the bar. Use it for anything the theme editor settings don't cover — a different font, a border, spacing tweaks, or hiding the icon on mobile. Target the bar's own classes so your rules don't affect the rest of the theme. The box holds up to 5,000 characters.
After changing custom CSS, check the bar on a phone as well as on desktop. A rule that fits a wide bar can wrap or overflow on a narrow one.
Premium Settings on This Page
- Milestones — Goals after free shipping, such as a free gift at $100. See Plans & Premium Features.
- Schedule — Start and end dates outside which the bar doesn't show at all. Also in that article.
Locked Settings
Settings your plan doesn't include are shown greyed out with a "Growth plan and up" or "Premium plan" note rather than hidden, so you can see what upgrading would give you. If you downgrade, those settings return to their defaults on the storefront but your stored values are kept, so upgrading again restores them.
