How the gift wrapping charge appears
Where the wrapping charge shows up in the cart, on the order, and in refunds.
Wrapping is a real line item, not a note on the order. That has some useful consequences.
In the cart and at checkout
The wrapping appears as its own line, with its own price. When a shopper wraps a particular item, the wrapping line is shown grouped underneath that item, the way an extended warranty is shown under the product it covers. Remove the product and Shopify removes its wrapping with it.
If you switch Group each wrap under the item it wraps off in the gift wrap settings, the wrapping is still charged — it simply sits as its own line in the list, and carries a Wraps property naming the item it belongs to.
The grouping is not available everywhere. Point of Sale, draft orders, order editing, and stores running the Script Editor app do not support it, and a wrapping bought there behaves as if grouping were switched off.
On the order
The order shows the wrapping style as the line item title and the gift message as a line item property, using whatever label you chose for it. The wrapping appears on the packing slip, so whoever packs the order can see what to wrap and what to write.
Taxes, discounts and refunds
Because wrapping is an ordinary product line:
- it is taxed according to the tax settings on the wrapping product;
- discount codes that apply to all products apply to it too, unless you exclude it;
- it can be refunded on its own, without refunding the item it wrapped;
- it shows up in your Shopify reports alongside everything else you sell.
Inventory
The wrapping variants do not track inventory, so wrapping never goes out of stock and never blocks a sale.
