Most subscription issues come down to a setting that’s missing or a product that isn’t linked to an option. This article walks through the problems merchants hit most often and how to resolve them.
The subscribe option isn’t showing on a product
If a product page doesn’t show the subscribe choice, check these in order:
The widget is added to the theme - In the theme editor, confirm the subscription widget block is on your product template.
The product is assigned to an option - The product must be added to a purchase option. Open the option and check the product is in its list.
The option is active - A paused or draft option won’t appear on the storefront.
A discount or intro price looks incorrect
Check which price applies - The intro price applies only to the first orders you specified; later orders use the standing discount. A renewal showing the standing price is working as intended.
Confirm the discount is on - If an option shows full price, make sure the “Offer a discount” switch is on and a value is set.
Fixed price vs. amount off - Double-check whether you chose a percentage, an amount off, or a fixed price — they read very differently to the customer.
A renewal didn’t create an order
Check the subscription’s status - Paused, cancelled, and expired subscriptions don’t renew.
Look for a payment problem - A failed charge stops the order; the customer may need to update their card.
Check the next order date - The order is created on the subscription’s schedule; confirm the date has actually arrived.
A customer can’t manage their subscription
Check the option’s permissions - Pause, skip, cancel, frequency change, and swap each have a switch. If an action is turned off, customers won’t see it in their account.
Minimum commitment - A customer can’t cancel before reaching the minimum number of orders. You can still cancel for them from your admin.
