The free plan shortens links and counts clicks; the paid plan adds control over the link itself and everything you can learn from those clicks. Link volume is not the dividing line — both plans allow unlimited links.
What the free plan includes
Unlimited short links - No cap on how many you create, and no monthly click limit
Generated short keys - Every link gets a five-character key, such as
yourstore.com/k4m2pLink names and private notes - Both editable at any time
QR codes - Every link has one, downloadable as PNG or SVG
Lifetime click counts - The total for each link, visible in the links table and on the link’s page
Home-page metrics - Total links, active links, clicks, and links created this week
Shopify Flow triggers - All four events, so you can automate off links being created, first clicked or hitting a click milestone
Shopify Sidekick - Find links and start new ones by asking the assistant
Clicks are recorded on the free plan even though you cannot chart them, so nothing is lost while you wait to upgrade.
What a paid plan adds
Custom short keys - Choose the part after your domain, up to 20 characters, so a link can read as
yourstore.com/vipExpiry dates - Give a link an end date when you create it, and have it drop out of your active links when the campaign closes
The Analytics page - Clicks over time, seven date ranges, your top links, and referrers
Device and platform breakdowns - How your clicks split across mobile, tablet and desktop, and across operating systems
Individual link reports - A per-link chart, its referrers, and a per-country breakdown
Trend comparisons - The percentage badges on the home page, comparing this period against the last
UTM passthrough - Forward UTM parameters from the short URL to the destination, so one link serves every channel

How the free plan behaves
Paid features stay visible rather than hidden, so you can see what they do before deciding:
On the create form - Custom URL and Set expiration date appear greyed out, with a link to upgrade beside them
On the Analytics page - An upgrade banner and a View Plans button replace your figures
In Settings - The UTM Passthrough toggle is replaced by an upgrade badge
Through Sidekick - Questions about clicks get an answer explaining that click data needs a paid plan, rather than figures
Choosing
Stay on free if you mainly want tidy links on your own domain and the click count is enough — a handful of campaigns, nothing printed, no reporting to do.
Upgrade when any of these is true:
You want the short URL itself to be readable, because it is going into print, onto packaging, or into a bio
Your campaigns have end dates you want reflected in the app
You need to know which channels actually deliver, not just that clicks happened
You share one link across several channels and want them told apart
Somebody expects a report
