Customer-specific rules let you apply different quantity limits based on customer tags. This means wholesale customers, VIPs, and retail shoppers can each have their own buying limits on the same products.

Shopify customer tags are labels you assign to customers in the Customers section of your admin. Common examples: wholesale, vip, retail, employee.

Setting Up Customer Tag Rules

  • Go to Rules and create or edit a rule

  • In the Customer tags section, enter one or more tags

  • Set the quantity limits for customers with those tags

  • Save the rule

You can create multiple rules for the same product with different tags. For example:

  • Retail customers (no tag) – max 5 per product

  • Wholesale (tag: wholesale) – min 50, step 10, no maximum

  • VIP (tag: vip) – max 20 per product

What Happens for Customers Without Matching Tags

  • If a rule targets a specific tag and the customer does not have that tag, the rule does not apply to them

  • If you also have a general rule (no tag filter) for the same product, that rule applies instead

  • If no rules match, the product has no quantity restrictions

What the Customer Sees

  • Logged-in customers see limits based on their tags automatically

  • Guest customers (not logged in) only see rules that have no tag filter

  • Error messages at checkout reflect the limits that apply to the specific customer
