Collection limits let you cap how many items a customer can buy from a specific collection in a single order. This is useful when you want to restrict purchases across a group of products rather than setting limits on each product individually.

Setting Up Collection Limits

  • Go to Rules and click Create rule

  • Choose Collection limit as the rule type

  • Select the collection you want to limit

  • Set the maximum items a customer can buy from that collection per order

  • Save the rule

Use Cases

  • Limited editions – Allow only 1 item per order from your “Limited Edition” collection

  • Sample packs – Let customers pick up to 5 samples from your “Samples” collection

  • Fair access – Limit high-demand product categories so more customers can purchase

What the Customer Sees

  • When a customer tries to add more items from the collection than allowed, they see an error message

  • The error explains how many items from that collection are already in the cart and the maximum allowed

  • At checkout, Shopify validates the limit again to prevent bypass

How It Works With Other Rules

Collection limits work alongside product-level rules. If a product has both a product quantity rule and falls within a collection limit, both are enforced. The stricter limit wins.

Plan

Available on all plans including Free (counts toward your rule limit). Growth and Advanced plans support unlimited rules.
