Cart and order limits control the overall cart rather than individual products. You can require a minimum or maximum number of items, a minimum or maximum order value, or weight-based limits before customers can check out.
Setting Up Cart Limits
Go to Settings > Cart Limits
Configure any combination of limits:
Minimum items – Require at least X items in the cart (e.g., minimum 3 items per order)
Maximum items – Cap the total number of items (e.g., no more than 50 items per order)
Minimum order value – Require a minimum dollar amount (e.g., orders must be at least $25)
Maximum order value – Cap the order total (e.g., orders cannot exceed $500)
Minimum weight – Require a minimum total weight
Maximum weight – Cap total cart weight (useful for shipping constraints)

What the Customer Sees
A banner appears above the checkout button on the cart page explaining what needs to change
The checkout button is disabled until the cart meets all limits
At checkout, Shopify validates the limits again – even if a customer bypasses the storefront warning, the order is blocked
Examples
Minimum order of $50 for free shipping eligibility
Maximum 2 items from a limited-edition drop
Maximum 30 kg to stay within shipping carrier limits
Plan
Item count and order value limits are available on all plans. Weight-based limits require the Growth plan or higher.
