Cart and order limits control the overall cart rather than individual products. You can require a minimum or maximum number of items, a minimum or maximum order value, or weight-based limits before customers can check out.

Setting Up Cart Limits

  • Go to Settings > Cart Limits

  • Configure any combination of limits:

    • Minimum items – Require at least X items in the cart (e.g., minimum 3 items per order)

    • Maximum items – Cap the total number of items (e.g., no more than 50 items per order)

    • Minimum order value – Require a minimum dollar amount (e.g., orders must be at least $25)

    • Maximum order value – Cap the order total (e.g., orders cannot exceed $500)

    • Minimum weight – Require a minimum total weight

    • Maximum weight – Cap total cart weight (useful for shipping constraints)

  • Save your settings

What the Customer Sees

  • A banner appears above the checkout button on the cart page explaining what needs to change

  • The checkout button is disabled until the cart meets all limits

  • At checkout, Shopify validates the limits again – even if a customer bypasses the storefront warning, the order is blocked

Examples

  • Minimum order of $50 for free shipping eligibility

  • Maximum 2 items from a limited-edition drop

  • Maximum 30 kg to stay within shipping carrier limits

Plan

Item count and order value limits are available on all plans. Weight-based limits require the Growth plan or higher.
