How customers receive what they bought

Choose one link per order, a link for each item, or a licence key

Most digital products are delivered the same way: someone buys, and they get a link to their file. But if you sell seats, site licences or anything where buying five means five separate things to hand out, one shared link is the wrong shape. The delivery method decides which of those you get, and it is set per variant so one product can work both ways.

You will find it on the product page, on each variant card. The badge on the card always shows the current method, and the button beside the files opens the setting.

The four methods

  • One link for the whole order — the default, and right for most products. Everything on the order is delivered together. If someone buys three copies of a PDF, they get one link with three times the download allowance, because what they want is the file.
  • A separate link for each item bought — someone buying five gets five distinct links, each with its own allowance and each able to be withdrawn on its own. Use this when the buyer is going to pass one to each person.
  • A separate link and key for each item — as above, and each link also carries a licence key from that variant's stock.
  • A key only, with no file — for products that are just a key. Nothing is downloaded.

When more than one is bought

With the default method, quantity raises the allowance. Buy two, and every file on that product allows twice as many downloads.

With either per-item method, quantity creates separate items instead. Your customer still gets the same delivery email they always would — it just links to a page listing everything they bought, each row with its own key, its own download link and its own remaining allowance, and a copy button for each.

If they bought those items for other people, they pass one row to each. Whoever opens a row sees only that one, with its own allowance, and you can withdraw a single row without touching the rest.

One thing to be aware of if you sell seats: the app emails the person who placed the order, because that is the only address Shopify gives us. If you need every seat holder emailed directly, collect their addresses yourself and forward their links.

Changing it later

Changing the method affects orders placed from that point on. Orders already delivered keep working exactly as they were.

If a product has already had orders where someone bought more than one, the product page will say so and offer to switch. That prompt is based on your own order history, not a guess.
