Custom Domain

Short Links uses your Shopify store’s domain for all shortened URLs. Your links automatically use your store’s primary domain, providing a branded experience without additional configuration.

Why Use a Custom Domain

Using your own domain for short links offers significant advantages:

Brand Recognition

Links like yourstore.com/a/s/sale are immediately recognizable as coming from your brand. Customers trust links from domains they know.

Increased Click-Through

Studies show branded short links get higher click rates than generic shorteners. People are more likely to click links from familiar domains.

No Third-Party Dependence

You’re not relying on external shortening services that could:

  • Shut down unexpectedly

  • Change their policies

  • Add ads or interstitials

  • Get blocked by spam filters

SEO Benefits

Links to your domain keep link equity within your brand ecosystem rather than passing it to third-party shortener domains.

Domain Requirements

Short Links works with your Shopify store’s domain setup:

Supported Domains

  • Custom domains connected to your Shopify store

  • The .myshopify.com subdomain (for testing)

Primary Domain

Your short links use whichever domain is set as primary in Shopify:

  • If primary is yourstore.com, links are yourstore.com/a/s/...

  • If primary is shop.yourstore.com, links are shop.yourstore.com/a/s/...

SSL/HTTPS

All domains on Shopify have automatic SSL. Your short links are always served over HTTPS for security.

Shopify Primary Domain Usage

Short Links automatically uses your store’s primary domain. No additional configuration is needed.

Checking Your Primary Domain

  1. Go to Shopify Admin > Settings > Domains

  2. See which domain is marked as “Primary”

  3. This is the domain used for short links

Changing Your Domain

If you change your primary domain in Shopify:

  • New short links will use the new domain

  • Existing short links may need the old domain to remain active

  • Consider redirects if changing domains

URL Structure with Custom Domains

All Short Links follow this structure:

https://[your-domain]/a/s/[unique-key]

Components:

  • [your-domain] - Your Shopify primary domain

  • /a/s/ - App proxy path (handled by Shopify)

  • [unique-key] - Your custom or generated link key

Examples:

The /a/s/ path is standard across all Short Links installations and is required for Shopify’s app proxy system to route requests correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a completely separate domain?

Currently, Short Links uses your Shopify store’s domain. Separate domains would require custom DNS and proxy configuration outside Shopify’s app system.

Yes, if that’s your primary domain. Links will be formatted as yourstore.myshopify.com/a/s/...

What if I have multiple domains?

Shopify allows multiple domains but only one primary. Short links use the primary domain. Visitors on other domains are typically redirected to primary.

Can I change the /a/s/ path?

No, this path is configured by the Shopify app proxy system and cannot be modified.
