Layout choice is what gives a gallery its personality. The same set of images can feel like a clean product grid, an editorial lookbook, a Pinterest-style mosaic, or a swipeable strip depending on which layout you pick. Image Gallery offers five layouts, all chosen in the app on the gallery’s own page — so the canvas you arrange is what your visitors get — and none of them require you to resize your images first.
The Five Layouts
Grid — uniform tiles - Every tile the same shape. The most predictable layout, perfect for product catalogues and structured pages. The tile shape is set on the theme block with Grid tile shape: Square (1:1), Portrait (3:4), Landscape (4:3), or Original ratio if you’d rather not crop at all.
Masonry — original heights, no cropping - Variable-height tiles that respect each image’s proportions. Columns stay straight but rows don’t line up, which is what gives it the editorial feel. Great when portrait, landscape, and square images mix together. Your images are never cropped.
Mosaic — mixed tile sizes - A patchwork where tiles differ in size: some span two columns, some two rows, some both. Roughly half the tiles come out non-square, and you can override any individual tile yourself — see “Sizing Individual Tiles” below.
Collage — a hero tile every eight images - Every 8th image (the 1st, 9th, 17th and so on) becomes a large tile spanning two columns and two rows, with the rest filling in around it. Good for long galleries that need a rhythm of focal points rather than a single hero at the top.
Carousel — a sliding strip - Shows as many images at once as your Images per row setting, and each click of the arrows advances by one image. At the end it wraps back to the start. Set Images per row to 1 for a classic one-at-a-time slideshow, or 3 for a scrolling filmstrip.
Choosing a Layout
The layout belongs to the gallery, and you set it in the app — there is no Layout setting in the theme editor:
Open the gallery in the app.
Pick a layout from the Layout dropdown in the Gallery settings card at the top of the page.
Watch the canvas below redraw - The images card is a live preview: it re-lays your real images in the layout you just picked, so you can judge it before committing.
Click Save - Use the Save button in the settings card, or the save bar that appears at the top of the page. Nothing reaches your storefront until you save.
Because the layout lives on the gallery, every page where that gallery is installed switches together. If you want two different looks, create a second gallery, pull the same pictures in from your library, and give it a different layout.
Images per Row
Images per row sits next to the Layout dropdown, and each layout treats it slightly differently:
Grid - An exact count. Every row holds that many tiles.
Masonry - The column count. Rows won’t line up evenly, because each image keeps its own height.
Mosaic - A target. Rows containing a tile that spans two columns fit fewer images.
Collage - A target, for the same reason: hero tiles take up two columns.
Carousel - How many slides are visible at once.
The app shows a short note under the setting explaining this for whichever layout is selected. Desktop and mobile each have their own count — see “Creating a Gallery” for the Desktop and Mobile toggle.
Sizing Individual Tiles (Mosaic)
The Mosaic layout lets you decide which images deserve more space:
Hover over any image in the gallery canvas.
Click the size badge in the top-left corner of the tile. It cycles through auto → large → wide → tall.
Large spans two columns and two rows, wide spans two columns, tall spans two rows, and auto lets the app decide.
The change saves on the spot and the canvas re-flows immediately — tile sizes don’t wait for the Save button.
An auto tile follows the app’s built-in mosaic pattern, which mixes large, wide, and tall tiles so the gallery reads as a mosaic rather than a grid. Setting a size by hand overrides that one tile; every other image keeps the automatic pattern.
Tile sizes apply only to the Mosaic layout. In Grid, Masonry, Collage, and Carousel the badge is hidden because the size would change nothing — but the value you set is remembered, so switching back to Mosaic restores it.
Tips for Choosing a Layout
Lots of product photos you want easy to compare - Grid with the Square tile shape.
A mix of portrait and landscape shots, no cropping - Masonry.
A lively, editorial patchwork with visual hierarchy - Mosaic, with your best shots set to Large.
A long gallery that needs regular focal points - Collage.
A compact strip that doesn’t take over the page - Carousel with 3 or 4 images per row.
